Compare Dragon Ball Ep. 1

I've always loved Dragon Ball Z as I watched it when I was young along with Inuyasha, Bleach, Sailor Moon- the usual. I haven't watched it in a really long time though. So I went back and started watching DBZ from the first episode, it referred back to previous times a lot. That's when I found out that there was in fact a Dragon Ball before DBZ! *I feel dumb for not knowing that* Now I am going to start from the very beginning and then watch DBZ, GT, & Kai.

Well I know their is a debate between which is better: English dubbed or Japanese subbed. I'll watch both, compare, then tell you what I think.

Episode 1: Bulma and Son Goku (sub)/ The Secret of the Dragon Balls (dub)
The first thing I have to talk about is the opening song that only appears in the Japanese Sub. I love it! and its a shame that it isn't in the English version. It's strange but cool that the English version left the ending song.

First words spoken by the narrator: Subbed- "Long ago in an age before our time on a mountain thousands of miles away from civilization, there lived a young boy who lived with nature."
Dubbed- "Far away in an enchanted land that seemed untouched by the steady march of time, there lived an old master named Gohan who found a baby boy abandoned in the wilderness of the region and raised him as his own child and marveled as the youngster grew and became uncommonly strong."

Other than that there wasn't many other differences- just very small ones like Bulma calling Goku an asshole and the Hoi Poi Capsules were renamed Dino Caps in the Dubbed. Also the fish talked in the Japanese version but didn't in the other.

These are details given in the Subbed version that weren't transferred: the name of the dragon is Shen Long and Bulma said that a man collected all the dragon balls and became king and they'd been scattered  ever since.

All in all: no big difference and good pilot episode. It showed how strong Goku was and introduced Bulma, the dragon balls and the bad guys.
